I am a self-taught artist with no formal education expect my God given talents and several art classes, workshops, and passion for art. My love for art became apparent at a very early age. I can remember writing poetry and doodling as young as 9 years of age.
In middle school, my art was usually selected so that it could be entered into our county fair that came every year. They say that behind every good student is a great teacher and in high school I had a favorite Art teacher, her free- spirited nature, flaming red hair and encouraging words were ones that certainly made quite an impression on me. I can still see her coming over to my desk and looking me straight in the eye, and saying, “you are going to be really good one day”
Her compliments were enough to make me hunger for the love of creation, bold colors, and vivid expression.
In addition to being an artist, I am a disabled veteran having served in the Navy during the Gulf war, a nurse, and aesthetician. My husband and I make our home in a beautiful 1888 historic home in Goliad, Texas with our three sweet fur babies where often one can see me either working in the garden, with my camera or my easel.
For me, art can be difficult to define because my style and subject matter changes so much. Also, when I create art its more of the feeling I happen to be feeling at the exact moment when my brush touches my canvas. I have been told that my artwork is “emotional”
My art varies from photography, acrylics, collages, and now oil painting. In 2022 our historic small town of Goliad, Texas had an art call for “Goliad thru My eyes” I entered my photography work and won first place and best of show. My photo became the first official postcard for Goliad. My photo is a collage of several historic landmarks dating back to 1749. I did not want to represent Goliad as just one subject in one photo, because it truly tells an entire historic story.
In 2023 I entered several calls for art entries in Corpus Christi, Texas where my photography piece named, “Sunburst” took first place. On the walls of the Corpus Christi art Center is where one can find my work for sale.
My artwork is also on display at the beautiful Rockport, Texas Center for the Arts. My most current piece is a 16×20, a nautical collage piece depicting the hatching of our endangered sea turtles here on the Gulf coast.
I never know what I am going to paint or create, to know the outcome would be too predictable and boring to me. It is the unknown that intrigues me. Picassos painting style known as cubism has always interested me because of the way he wanted to emphasize different ways of perceiving the world around us. Mexican artist such as Diego Riveria is a favorite due to his vibrant colors and Native American artist, John Nieto moves me with his style of color and how he views objects around him
My hope for one that likes my artwork is that they are also moved, and that it reminds them of a memory whether sad or happy because everyone has their own interpretations. As for now, I will continue to do what I love and that is to create beautiful art!
